Arts Committee Meeting 12/5/2011

We decided to adopt an informal meeting format because of the small number present.

Art Show Agenda Item:
Discussion of where Art Committee is going in relation to Occupy Salem. Discussion about what Art Show might bring to Occupy Salem. Discussion about what Art Show might bring to Occupy Movement. Discussion of Art Show dates and possible locations. John is going to ask gallery owner he knows. Decision that Art Show will occur Jan. 27th, 28th and 29th. There will be an opening party on evening of 27th, a meeting discussing pertinent issues to Occupy Movement mid-day Saturday and an event on Sunday to add hand prints to a canvas. More discussion of locations and submission deadlines, etc.

Occupy Salem Arts Committee
Mission:
* Recognizing that we each learn and communicate in our own ways, and celebrating the creative spirit within all of us, the Arts Committee’s mission is to facilitate opportunities for artistic expression in support of the Occupy movement within Occupy Salem and the whole community.

Goals:
* To gather supplies, space and teachers for people to create expressive arts including visual arts, fiber arts, poetry, movement and music.
* To reach out to artists and craftspeople and invite their participation in the Occupy movement.

Minutes 10/24:
Tara, Beth in attendance
Discussed mission of the committee
Agreed we need regular, well-publicized classes and events
Tara has interest and ability in crocheting
Open Mic to be held at 5:00

Minutes 10/25:
Tara, Katharine, Beth in attendance
(Meeting was short, standing in the cold after a long, late morning GA)
Brief review of written mission/goals draft, approval of wording from all present
Open Mic happened Monday night.
Prayer/intention flags will happen at 4:00

Minutes 10/26
Nyla, Beth in attendance (Katharine there for post-meeting review)
Nyla is going to print and frame some of her photos and will be looking for some assistance in presentation, location
Nyla will explore connections she has with Reed Opera House and Clockworks to see about gallery space in January for her photos and possibly other art produced in support of Occupy Salem. She will let the Arts committee know what she finds out.
Plans confirmed for pumpkin decorating at 3:30

Setting of Agenda.
Discussion of mission, goals, guidelines and principles for Arts Committee. Will continue to review OWS document and other occupation Arts Committee guidelines. Will revisit tomorrow.
Discussion of Outreach programs toward the Arts Committee. Decided will revisit after more infrastructure in place.
Discussion of limitations facing Arts Committee and brainstorming how to work around. Will revisit again tomorrow.
Discussion of dates and times for activities:
Tomorrow, 10/21: 3:30 Expressive Arts Session – goal of making Declaration Signs to be facilitated by Katharine
Monday, 10/24: 5:00 Open Poetry Mic to be facilitated by Alex
Tuesday, 10/25: 4:00 Expressive Arts Session – goal undecided but to be facilitated by Beth, Katharine and Alex
Wednesday, 10/26: 3:30 Pumpkin painting with sharpies – to be facilitated by ?

All committee members will continue to try to nail down artists to come soon to create onsite
