Education Minutes (Jan 22, 2012)

1-22-12 Education Committee Minutes

Present
Laurie Dougherty, Peter Bergel

Jan 23 Event

Peter will send out a last reminder tonight and sent a Facebook reminder out
today. Everything looks to be in place for this one.

Feb. 4, Awakening the Dreamer
Registrations are coming in slowly.

Peter will take fliers to the NDAA event tomorrow and Tuesday’s GA.

For information and registration for this event, send this link to OPW’s
home page around to your lists: www.oregonpeaceworks.org .

Feb 8, Fair Trade Event at OPW

Neither of us has heard from Chuck about this.
Laurie tried to call him from the meeting.

We won’t have an Education Committee meeting next Sunday because Peter can’t attend or open OPW, so Chuck needs to help us set this up some other way.

Mar. 7 Gross National Happiness Concept

Laurie still plans to do this one. We need to plan it next meeting.

New Topics

We discussed new topics we’d like to schedule soon. Judith sent a Facebook
message to Peter suggesting a topic, but he was not totally clear about what
the topic is. He read Judith’s message to Laurie, but they were still not
sure. Judith: please clarify.

Media Skills Training

Peter mentioned a suggestion that came out of the Occupy Oregon GA on
Saturday to schedule a training on developing a more professional
relationship with the mainstream media.

Tying the Military Budget into the Larger Economic Picture

Why We Can’t Fight Our Way to a Peaceful Economy

Peter also wants to plan a forum on this topic. Russ Beaton and Bill
Smaldone were mentioned as possible speakers. He also said he used to speak
on this topic a lot in the 90s, but he’s not as up-to-speed on it now.

Economics that We Can Live With

Jobs that Don’t Destroy Our Environment

Laurie suggested this one and we thought the speaker might be Erin Madden,
an environmental attorney who spoke very well at this weekend’s rally, or
someone representing the Steelworkers’ union, which – Laurie said – has been
good on these issues.

Next Meeting: Feb. 5
